Group photo of the participants

Date: 21-22 March 2022
Location: Eindhoven University of Technology, Eindhoven, the Netherlands
Attention: This is an in-person workshop.
  • Organs on chips are small medical devices in which researchers can grow living cells to model human organ functions.
  • Setting up and operating these small chips with a fluidic system around it requires learning basic principles of physical processes, tools and methods.
  • This is a MasterClass where biologists and non-technical users of these systems learn how to choose, set up and work with organ on chips.
Lectures by AZAR Innovations:
    • Organ on a chip designs and configurations
    • Organ on a chip components: types of the components, how they work and where to buy them
    • Organ on a chip operation: preparation, adding cells, simple microfluidic theories and troubleshooting methods (e.g. bubbles and leakages)
    • Commercial Organ on chips: choosing the right system, organ on chips libraries and resources
Hands-on lab session by AZAR Innovations:
    • Set up Organ on chips: work with different components, connect different components.
    • Operate Organ on chips: practical operation, troubleshoot possible problems
Expert views (online presentations):
    • Dr. Pelin Candarlioglu – Cell Biologist/Bioengineer at Complex In Vitro Models (CIVM) group at GSK
    • Dr. Janny van den Eijnden-van Raaij – Managing Director hDMT
    • Dr. Martin Trapecar – Professor of Medicine and Biomedical Engineering, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
    • Dr. Ben Maoz – Department of Biomedical Engineering, and Sagol School of Neuroscience, Tel Aviv University
    • Dr. Mohammad Albanna – Founder & Chief Executive Officer, Humabiologics, Inc.
    • Dr. Stephen Gray – Co-founder Ourobionics & Cybosense
Hands-on lab session with commercial products:
    • Work with commercial products
    • Companies:

Bi/ond aims at recreating key aspects of human organs by combining biology and microelectronics. We provide biologists with an organ-on-chip platform that nourishes, stimulates, and monitors 3D tissues (organoids, ex vivo tissue, spheroids, and microtissues) as well as tissue-tissue interface models.

NETRI is a company developing innovative technologies for the pharmaceutical industry. Its patented organ-on-a-chip technologies allow the creation of standardized, human and predictive in vitro models. This allows to anticipate the efficacy of an innovative treatment, to accelerate preclinical research phases, and to reposition compounds, while limiting animal testing. The use of human neural circuits coupled with multiple cell types opens the way to more personalized medicine and faster and more relevant diagnostics. Current application areas include neurological disorders, cosmetics and nutrition.

React4life is an Italian biotech company which patented MIVO® (Multi In Vitro Organ).
This cutting-edge microphysiological system enables researchers to overcome the limits of current in vitro assays and animal models. It improves the reliability and predictivity of several applications: pharmaceutical drug-testing, personalized medicine, novel immuno-oncology therapies, cosmetics, dermatology, and nutraceutical.

  • Scientific Advisors:
    • Prof.dr.ir. Jaap den Toonder (Microsystems group chair, Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands)
    • Dr. Stephen Gray (Ourobionics & Cybosense)

save the children, organ on a chip, science

10% of all the income in this workshop goes to Save the Children.

Every child has the right to grow up happy and carefree. That’s why Save the Children does whatever it takes to improve their lives. Because every child should be able to make their mark on the world and help build a better future.
